When can a bias be helpful?

When I first tried to answer this thought myself, I was immediately biased to say "how can any kind of bias be helpful?"

From the time we wake up to the time we go to bed, we all experience various kinds of biases. It seems impossible to not feel any bias or to complete overcome all kinds of biases. Personally, I am biased as a mom about how amazing my kids are (Maternal Bias), I am biased about how I am good at what I do (Self Bias), I am biased about my family and friends, I am biased about my team members. However, are all our biases wrong? Can any of these help us? Protect us?

My bias as a mom has helped me protect my kids. My bias on my skills helps me feel confident at work. My bias towards my team members

helps me intentionally serve my team as a servant leader. My bias towards Marketing, makes me feel proud to be a part of this department. My bias towards my leaders makes me want to go above and beyond as a team member.

Although, in general any bias towards people based on who they are or where they come from may not be helpful. I do believe, biases exists in all of us and in some cases they can be helpful.
